Spotlight on Inaugural Li-Li Hsaio Fellow Emily Zangla

My name is Emily Zangla and I am a second year pediatric nephrology fellow at the University of Minnesota. I was honored to be the recipient of the Li-Li Hsiao Fellowship for 2022! So far, it has been an amazing experience to be able to attend the monthly WIN Council meetings. As a result, I have been able to learn the inner workings of an international academic organization and collaborate with WIN council members in various committees to plan the Leadership Conference and Mentorship programs. I have gained pearls of knowledge through the professional development series. Right now, I am pioneering fellow-specific WIN programming as part of my Hsiao scholarship that I hope will lay a foundation for years to come.

This scholarship has given me a unique opportunity to learn and hone in on vastly important career skills including teamwork and communication with people around the world, creativity, event planning, goal setting and negotiating. This is providing me with the groundwork so that I can become successful as I launch my career as a pediatric nephrologist.

What I am most grateful for is the role models I have gained. Witnessing what success looks like from these women has inspired me to strive towards becoming a better physician, advocate for my patients and leader in nephrology.

I am looking forward to being part of the Leadership Conference this year so I can continue to grow my nephrology connections and skill set plus present my scholarship work to the WIN members!
