About WIN

Women in Nephrology: What is WIN?

Mission

WIN was founded in 1983 by women in the field of Nephrology. The overriding goal was to develop and provide mentors to women in the field. WIN strives to aid women in developing exciting careers in the field of renal disease. WIN also advocates within the nephrology community for education and research relevant to women. Over the years, WIN has expanded its purpose to mentoring both professional men and women in the field of Nephrology.

Mentorship/Community

WIN provides access to senior women in the field of Nephrology who are motivated to help mentor more junior physicians and scientists. In addition, WIN strives to help women advance in the field of Nephrology.

Career Guidance

WIN can provide you with a community of female MDs and PhDs in Nephrology to help you achieve your professional goals. From 1999 - 2014, WIN sponsored a 1-day Professional Development Seminar at the ASN Kidney Week. This course, designed for early and mid-career Nephrologists and Scientists interested in career guidance, to date, has served over 500 physicians and research scientists, both men and women. In order to provide this valuable resource to an ever-widening community of women in nephrology, beginning in 2015, this course will be offered at various venues.

A Career Choices in Nephrology Symposium sponsored by WIN has been incorporated into the official program of the Spring Meetings of the National Kidney Foundation. This symposium is given high marks by all participants who are able to interact with a panel of men and women: Nephrologists working in basic and clinical science research, private practice or devoted primarily to education or administration. Topics such as career development, contract negotiations, funding resources and mentor selection are covered.

Education

During the annual ASN Kidney Week, WIN sponsors a luncheon lecture, by a well-known speaker, in memory of Dr. Nancy Gary, WIN co-founder and first President. These lectures cover topics not routinely addressed at the ASN meetings, such as ethics in nephrology. All ASN attendees are invited to attend.

WIN has also organized a scientific symposium at the ASN Kidney Week meeting in past years.
